Electrical Engineer

FLSA: Exempt

SUMMARY:

The Engineering Staff will provide engineering support and technical direction for defining, designing, bringing to market, and supporting NICOR’s solid-state lighting product lines.  The Electrical Engineer will deal with control systems focusing on the design, development, and testing of our products.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure product design integrity by reviewing designs, recommending actions, providing solutions to the most technical challenges and providing overall electrical technical leadership.
  2. Specific responsibility for creating system architecture, combining lighting, controls and services.
  3. Work with Management teams, Marketing, and Sales to define new product requirements, and map the requirements into technical performance specifications.
  4. Work closely with Manufacturing Operations to bring new SSL product designs through prototyping, testing, certification, and product launch.
  5. Differentiate and manage SSL product design projects including technology provider selection; project goals; schedules; budget; and overall project management functionalities.
  6. Define, organize, and maintain NICOR Server file structure of SSL specifications, CAD files, design documents and revisions, bills of materials (BOMs), etc.
  7. Evaluate and select the electrical, mechanical, thermal, optical, and semiconductor components determined to be optimal for design and manufacture of NICOR SSL products.
  8. Continuously review and evaluate new SSL technologies, competitor products, and NICOR SSL products (including field failures and customer returns) to keep NICOR at the forefront of SSL competition.
  9. Help optimize supply chain, manufacturing cost reduction, quality control, and resolution of any product issues.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Engineering software - Electrical: Solid works PCB, Eagle PCB, PC Worx, JetBrains; InDesign; Illustrator; Photometric toolbox.
  • Strong lighting controls experience, DALI protocols a plus.
  • Understanding/knowledge of lighting basics, solid state lighting, LED arrays and PCB design
  • Basic math and reading (English) skills.
  • Good organizational and time management skills, with excellent follow-up.
  • Five years related industry experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Theory-of-operation knowledge and understanding of LED’s, electrical power supply and drive circuitry, heat sink thermodynamics, optics, and general knowledge of Solid-State Lighting components.
  • Experience with BLE MESH, Wi-Fi based system architecture, DALI control systems and system development.
  • Experience with IoT solutions and controls a plus
  • Experience specifying plug-n-play low-voltage and line-voltage wiring systems a plus
  • General hands-on proficiency with computers, electronic test instruments, lab and shop tools related to prototype building and testing.
  • Experience with PLC programing to IEC 61131-3 standard and other system controls standards.
  • Proven project management skills and experience as related to bringing new products to market on time and within budget.
  • Ability to interface with and manage a wide variety of component suppliers, technology vendors, contract manufacturers, design service providers, etc.
  • Critical thinking and problem resolution skills a must.
  • Responsive sense of urgency to take approved final product to market in an efficient manner.
  • Experience working with international cross-functional teams.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • In a typical interior/warehouse/office environment:  work performed in an Office setting is largely a sedentary role, must be able to sit for long durations of time; warehouse environment with exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust and fumes.
  • May require standing or walking for more than 4 hours per day.
  • Shop work building, modifying, and testing SSL prototypes using hand tools.
  • Laboratory work using electrical and mechanical test equipment.
  • Able to lift 40lbs.
  • Limited travel to various service/component suppliers’ meetings or industry conferences and trade shows.

Project Coordinator

SUMMARY:

NICOR Lighting sells a variety of lighting products as well as large projects to a smaller set of key customers. These projects can be large in scope and delivered in several stages in accordance with our customers construction schedules.  The Project Coordinator will collaborate with all internal departments such as Sales, Engineering, Procurement and Production, as well as provide continuous support to the customer.  A high level of technical understanding and at least three years of Project Management/Inside Sales/Technical Position experience in the lighting manufacturing industry is required.

REPORTS TO:

VP of Sales

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop project plan/schedule and coordinate required resources to meet scheduled deadlines for the entire project
  2. Understand the scope of the project, take ownership and act as the primary contact for the customer
  3. Follow-up at all project phases to keep the project on track to meet expectations. Includes: submittal preparation, approval reviews, order management, progressive billing and additional support tasks.
  4. Actively maintaining customer relationships to ensure customer satisfaction and quality of service
  5. Provide excellent follow-up for all sales calls and orders as needed
  6. Communicate project updates with customers and other internal/external parties
  7. Organize and document all commercial and technical aspects of the project
  8. Coordinate shipping and delivery of product to customers n
  9. Responsible for coordinating all specification documents including product specification sheets, installation instructions, quotes, construction documents and other technical information. Keeping track of revisions in all documentation.
  10. Work closely with VP of Sales or Regional Sales Managers to establish pricing and develop quotes
  11. Acting as liaison with the customer and project staff to properly identify and process scope changes, address issues, communicate regarding project milestones, etc.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven track record of 3-5 years of project management in an electrical field.
  • Advanced technical aptitude.
  • Basic understanding of lighting principles; lumen output, CCT range, commercial lighting, systems experience a plus.
  • Experience with electrical products, lighting layout drawings and architectural design a plus.
  • Technical knowledge of solid-state lighting products; LED lighting.
  • An understanding of lighting and building terms.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Illustrator, InDesign a strong plus.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of project management in the electrical/lighting industry; ideally with an electrical distributor, lighting distributor or NEMRA sales rep agency
  • Experience reading and understanding architectural building drawings and lighting schedules
  • 10+ years in the commercial lighting industry and strong hands-on product knowledge
  • Experience in a team environment
