Electrical Engineer

FLSA:  Exempt

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.



The Engineering Staff will provide engineering support and technical direction for defining, designing, bringing to market, and supporting NICOR’s solid-state lighting product lines.  The Electrical Engineer will deal with control systems focusing on the design, development, and testing of our products.



  • Work with Management teams, Marketing, and Sales to define new product requirements, and map the requirements into technical performance specifications.
  • Work closely with Manufacturing Operations to bring new SSL product designs through prototyping, testing, certification, and product launch.
  • Differentiate and manage SSL product design projects including: technology provider selection; project goals; schedules; budget; and overall project management functionalities.
  • Define, organize, and maintain NICOR technical database libraries of SSL specifications, CAD databases, design documents and revisions, bills of materials (BOS), etc.
  • Evaluate and select the electrical, mechanical, thermal, optical, and semiconductor components determined to be optimal for design and manufacture of NICOR SSL products.
  • Continuously review and evaluate new SSL technologies, competitor products, and NICOR SSL products (including field failures and customer returns) so as to keep NICOR at the forefront of SSL competition.
  • Help optimize supply chain, manufacturing cost reduction, quality control, and resolution of any product issues.



  • BS Degree - Specified Engineering Disciplines include:
    • Electrical Engineer – EE
    • Mechanical Engineer – ME
    • Application Engineer - AE
    • Solid State Lighting Engineer - SSLE



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Engineering software - Mechanical:  Solid works, Draft sight; Electrical:  Solid works PCB, Eagle PCB, PC Worx, JetBrains; InDesign; Illustrator; Photometric toolbox
  • Basic math and reading (English) skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills, with excellent follow-up
  • Five years related industry experience preferred



  • Theory-of-operation knowledge and understanding of: LED’s, electrical power supply and drive circuitry, heat sink thermodynamics, optics, and general knowledge of Solid-State Lighting components.
  • General hands-on proficiency with computers, electronic test instruments, lab and shop tools related to prototype building and testing.
  • EE to have strong control experience.
  • Good project management skills and experience as related to bringing new products to market.
  • Ability to interface with and manage a wide variety of component suppliers, technology vendors, contract manufacturers, design service providers, etc.
  • Critical thinking and problem resolution skills a must.
  • Responsive sense of urgency to take approved final product to market in an efficient manner.
  • Experience working with international cross-functional teams.
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to prioritize business needs.
  • Team player, strong collaboration skills.



  • In a typical interior/warehouse/office environment:  work performed in an Office setting is largely a sedentary role, must be able to sit for long durations of time; warehouse environment with exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust and fumes.
  • May require standing or walking for more than 4 hours per day.
  • Shop work building, modifying, and testing SSL prototypes using hand tools.
  • Laboratory work using electrical and mechanical test equipment.
  • Able to lift 40lbs.
  • Limited travel to various service/component suppliers’ meetings or industry conferences and trade shows.
